Church Studio Residence
Chester County, PA

Restoration and renovation of Historic Church into a single family residence, now once again a welcoming hall for a large extended family and community.

Built in 1892, the St Francis Xavier Catholic Church was deconsecrated and became the studio to a sculpture artist for decades. This iteration embraces both of it's past lives as a community icon, but through careful restoration and clever programmatic shifting, it is now also a 3 bedroom home.

In the main hall, original elements of the church were restored including the stained glass windows, tin ceiling, wood flooring and trims. The second floor choir loft was enclosed with an added bay window to accommodate a spacious and light-filled Primary suite.

A new mezzanine level provides secondary access to the main space and a loft-like office. Underneath the mezzanine, a more intimate lounge was created with a built-in bookshelf wall that also provides a backdrop to the Dining area.

The Kitchen is located at the raised altar with full height south facing windows facing the gardens. With the dining table down the central nave, and a living room with custom concrete hearth for the wood burning stove surrounded by the tall stained glass windows - the main hall is once again a gracious and welcoming hall for a large extended family and community.
